Benjamin Tisch — brother of NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch — used a podium at a major charity dinner to brand mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani an “enemy of Jewish people.”
Tisch, president and CEO of Loews Corporation and a prominent Jewish philanthropist, was presenting an award at the Met Council’s annual holiday dinner at the Mandarin Oriental when he launched into a blistering denunciation of the incoming mayor.
Tisch said he feared for the direction of the city after Mamdani’s election, zeroing in on the Democratic Socialist lawmaker’s record as a fierce critic of Israel. Mamdani has previously threatened to have Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrested over the Gaza war if he visits New York and has refused to say Israel should exist as a Jewish state.
The broadside came just weeks after his sister, Jessica Tisch, agreed to Mamdani’s request that she remain on as police commissioner, despite sharp disagreements over bail reform, “Raise the Age” laws, and Israel.
The remarks also followed similar comments from Apollo Global Management CEO Marc Rowan, who on Monday told a packed UJA-Federation Wall Street dinner that a politician who “uses antisemitism in their campaign and normalizes antisemitism” is “our enemy” — a clear reference to Mamdani.
The powerful Tisch family, excluding Jessica, poured millions into backing Mamdani’s rival, former governor Andrew Cuomo, in a failed attempt to block the DSA-aligned candidate.
In a statement, Commissioner Tisch tried to calm the waters. “I understand the fear in the Jewish community,” she said. “My sincere belief is that the mayor-elect will live up to the commitment he’s made to be a mayor for all New Yorkers, including the Jewish community.”
Mamdani told reporters Thursday that his police commissioner had contacted him to apologize for her brother’s comments.
