Is it better to support Torah learning, or the poor of Eretz Yisrael? An unexpected answer.

There are so many important causes, but your tzedakah money is limited.  How do you choose?

We know there are halachic priorities in giving.  But did you know that there’s one tzedakah fund which uniquely allows you to double the power of your tzedakah?  To support both Torah learning and the poor of Eretz Yisrael at the same time?

Because there’s one city in Eretz Yisrael that proudly bears the reputation of the Torah learning capital of Israel – the only city where the majority of adult men are engaged in full-time Torah learning.

Kiryat Sefer.

It’s a city filled with families living lives of quiet, simple dignity.  Making do with as little as possible, because they know that Torah is the biggest treasure in the world.

But when you live on every last shekel, even a small crisis can push you over the edge.  Can mean the difference between supper for your family, or sending your children to bed hungry.

Sound like an exaggeration?  It wasn’t for the Steinberg* family.  Rabbi Steinberg is a talmid chacham who spends his days learning.  But when his wife, a preschool morah, began to suffer from post-partum depression, the household stopped functioning, and the family finances fell apart.  In an effort to bring in income, Rabbi Steinberg invested his small savings, based on the advice of an ‘expert’ – which turned out to be a scam.  They were left without a shekel.

It was when their son’s rebbi noticed that the boy had not been bringing lunch to school – not even a slice of bread – that he called Matan B’Seter, the Kupa of Kiryat Sefer.

Matan B’Seter is the safety net for over 100,000 Kiryat Sefer residents.  These families of dedicated Torah learners know that in time of crisis, they have somewhere to turn.  Matan B’Seter provides basic food staples for thousands of Torah learning families.  In addition, it offers Yom Tov assistance, financial counseling, funding for medical and mental health needs, wedding assistance, subsidized clothing and school supplies, and more.

For Pesach, the Kupah will be assisting over 5,000 families with food and clothing expenses, totaling close to $800,000.

Today, the Steinbergs are standing on their own feet, thanks to Matan B’Seter.  And Rabbi Steinberg is back in the Beis Medrash, keeping the world going with his Torah learning.

Thanks to the help of people like you.
