The coalition is reportedly preparing a fast-track legislative move aimed at securing the release of bnei yeshiva arrested over the draft issue, as the broader Draft Law remains tied up in legal and political complications.
According to Kan News political correspondent Shahar Glick, coalition officials are considering deleting all sections of the current Draft Law proposal and leaving only the clause dealing with the release of those arrested over the draft issue. The goal is to move quickly without the complexity of drafting and advancing an entirely new bill from scratch.
However, the plan is already facing legal resistance. Knesset Legal Adviser Sagit Afik has reportedly made clear in closed-door conversations that she opposes the move on legal grounds.
The coalition is pushing the move due to the difficulty of passing new legislation in an expedited process. Likud officials reportedly promised Shas chairman Aryeh Deri several days ago that they would bring the law forward, but because of the legal complications, the target date has now been pushed off until Monday.
At the same time, Degel HaTorah chairman Moshe Gafni and representatives of the Ashkenazi Chareidi parties do not view the move as a sufficient solution and are still insisting on advancing the Daycare Law.
Kan News also reported earlier this week that senior Degel HaTorah officials met to plan an unprecedented protest against the draft, with tens of thousands of Chareidim expected to take part. The plan includes massive convoys of vehicles traveling across Israel toward the military prison, in an effort to slow traffic and protest the arrests of Chareidi bnei yeshiva.
