First time I’ve ever felt an earthquake. About 20 minutes ago. Lasted for almost a minute. It was felt across the East Coast. The Capitol and Pentagon were evacuated in Washington.
I felt it in the Five Towns
This is truly frightening!!!!
Actually in entire east coast of U.S. of American Lands.
Just wondering, is there a Brocha to say upon this rare occasion? If so can we still recite it?

if the earthquake is mild its probably a problem to say it even during the quake bbecause it might be a big truck rumbling by or something else that causes the ground to vibrate

Did anyone in boro park feel it? I didn’t…but my phone’s not working and neither is anyone else’s phone around me.

I’ll look it up later, but I would think logically that an earthquake is Shekocho Ugvuraso Malei Olam. And you have to say it within Toch K’dei Dibor (1.5-4 seconds) of when you stop feeling the earthquake.
First time for me too! My office chair began moving and it felt weird. I know it’s on wheels, but it was moving and I wasn’t. Then the window treatments were moving and I thought it’s a breeze. Then the foundation of the building was shaking–and only then it occurred to me that this might be an earthquake! Just as soon as I realized what’s going on, the quake stopped. Thankfully nothing happened and I hope that no one else who experienced this sustained any injuries or damage.
Whew… I’m relieved!!

Interesting that it was centered near Washington DC and was felt all the way up to Martha’s Vineyard, where President Obama is vacationing. I’m just sayin’.

Yehudah Tzvi, I think you might be onto something…I do not believe in coincidence only co-incidents.
When the tremor hit, I actually thought for a moment that I was chalilah possibly having a stroke, as everything started to move from side to side. I felt dizzy for about ten seconds, and then it eased up. I don’t ever recall such a thing happening before.

On the Bracha: See Orach Chayim 227:1 where the Shulchan Aruch states that either “Oseh Ma’aseh B’reishis” or “Shekocho Ugvuraso Malei Olam” is acceptable. Based on the Mishnah B’rurah’s logic in S”K 5 there (by thunder and lightning) I would personally say “Shekocho” on an earthquake but either one is completely acceptable.

Chofetzchaim: i read the article you pointed to and immediately felt like i was reading something straight out of my spam folder. Indeed, that is not far from the truth.
Because you said tzorech iyyun, i did the requisite due diligence and felt there is good reason to discredit the advice of “Doug Copp”. A simple search will reveal the American Red Cross response to his method, as well as a snopes article attacking the man#s credibility and character. Suffice it to say that it would be far better to follow the advice of accredited safety organizations over that of a self proclaimed expert.
Bottom line is the best advice is to crawl under something that will protect your head from falling objects, and hold on to it. Lying down in open space seems not.to be a good idea.

I didn’t feel a thing but my wife (Rockland) reported that the house was shaking and thing fell off the furniture. My mother in Brooklyn says it sounded like someone was banging on her door.
Also felt in Ohio and up to Rhode Island. Some people at work felt it, others didn’t. I guess it depends where the fault line is.
Very scary as it lasted longer that the earthquakes in ’85, ’87 and ’02. Yes, January 2002.

If I may, I’d like to contribute one criticism and that is that I think it is a mistake to say that OOT places are “surrounding”. Nit shaiyach that OOT could be neighbors with the s’vivah of Brooklyn!
Reporting second hand from Boro Park where effects were very much felt.
My son was in the bakery and felt the shaking so that at 9 this evening was still feeling dizzy. This was his second experience, the first being while living in Yerushalayim.
One of the grandchildren came home saying they were on the rooftop playgroung and felt the shaking so that the whole building was quickly evacuated.
My mother’s nurse said she woke up because her bed was shaking so, she thought she was dreaming at first.
IN summary, the best interview I heard on the radio said, “it was exciting, everyone should experience an earthquake once in their life, but once is it.”
No one was hurt, no serious damage. You would consider it fun if it happened at an amusement park.
Has anyone heard why the Quake occurred? Interesting it was not in the Pacific Ring of Fire area.

A) I want to know the 2 seforim that fell out of the seforim shelf.
B) there must have been a kapara for us already that this earth quake was not as bad as it should have been…. Yehuda kletzky alov hasholom was killed this time last month.
C) it’s almost chodesh Elul, DO TESHUVA!!!
The earth is shaking so I think we should shake more and WAKE UP!!!!
