You can set your browser to remember your username and password so you don’t have to type it every time. Also, set it to keep you logged in.

    Dear wonderful and wise mods:

It would be very helpful if you would observe the following CR rule:

5 – Please try to post in a language somewhat resembling English. Visit spellcheck.net if you need help. Mozilla Firefox browser also offers a spellcheck option. If your comment is not written in normal English, it will not be approved.

    1) This would make it easier for those of us who want to understand the posts.

    2) It would force those who are not observing the rule to learn to communicate like menschen and have respect for those who want to read their posts.

    Thank you.

I will only approve posts that I can understand, but I am not about to delete everything that isn’t 100% up to snuff. There is a bit of a loophole in “somewhat resembling,” you see… 🙂

    Mods but I don’t want everyone knowing it’s me…..

When you change your screen name, it changes by all your old posts too. And your old screen name will go to your profile, which will show your new screen name. So you won’t be able to help that.

Haifa: I don’t want to be mean, but you really have to stop with the grammar. I know you don’t mean harm, but is it pretty obnoxious, and often quite mean. If this was survivor CR, I’d be voting you off the island.

Second, you’ve given me a great idea. Why don’t we take a vote? I think I’ll start a new thread for that purpose.

Haifagirl: I don’t think it will succeed, only/mostly because of how much more work it will be for the mods. Of course, you could offer your services…

That is one reason why it wouldn’t work. More importantly, though, we are not trying to run a forum for English graduate students. We are open to everyone, whether they speak perfect English or not.

I can’t/shouldn’t speak for Haifagirl, but I don’t think anyone expects perfection. The ‘texting’ English bothers me the most. IMHO, if someone wants their posts to be read, they should make them readable.

The current standard is “readable to the mods.” Close enough? 🙂

I think that’s quite fair. I am curious to know if 007 concurs. 🙂

haifa- you’re a fan of P-Language. But thats not the used language. The e-language is what is used by the general populace. Maybe i just lean towards sociolinguistics over the ideal pure language standards, or maybe as (at the risk of exposing myself…) a language major, i’ve just learned that the standard based on the politically and economically powerful and the stigmatization that comes with deviation is unfair and unbased. what is stigmatized today becomes tomorrow’s standard, for example the verbs text, blog, email.

also, there are varieties of language used in different circumstances. the way one speaks to his friends differs from how he speak to the president, how he writes an essay from a letter to a cousin (and both from speech), etc.

I dont think its fair to be setting a standard at the p-language level because it will be cutting off and blocking out some posters. that is a decision only the ywn editor could make, alone. to request no text talk is one thing, to pull up every typo another. and even within that, if the mods can understand a text-like post, it may be directed to a specific other poster who also understands it, and i dont see reason to interfere with that. it may not be understandable for all the posters, but neither do i understand all the halacha debates or discworld discussions. so i will skip the posts i can’t or dont want to read, and go on to the next. if you cannot understand a post, you can ask the poster to repost. but if despite the errors, it is understandable, why interfere, unless it is in jest and taken that way. (yes, anyone who would like to find my grammar and spelling errors in this post has my permission 🙂 )

Superme, if you want to start over with a new name that nobody knows is you, just make a new account. (Making multiple accounts for the purpose of trolling is against the rules but we don’t mind if someone wants to just start over). But, considering the way you’ve been posting until now, I doubt it would take long before people figure out that it’s you 🙂

There’s a difference between a few mistakes here and there, and something almost unreadable. Certainly we can all read those posts that are in text language, but that’s not the point.

If I wrote a post totally in pig latin, I’m sure everyone in the CR would be able to read it. However, it would take them a bit longer because it would be more difficult. I care enough about the people I write for that I don’t want them to have to struggle to read what I write. I would just appreciate the same consideration from others.

    All the rest is commentary.

I definitely hear what you are saying, but the point is, who is to say that something is unreadable? How much of it has to be in txtspk? How many grammatical errors make it fail inspection? It would really be nonsensical to try and implement any such system.

what the mod on duty said 🙂

but Certainly we can all read those posts that are in text language, but that’s not the point.

why is that not the point? this is only a forum. if you wrote in pig latin because it was easiest for you, most wouldnt complain. and again, not all the posts are actually written for all. I can name a few posters who’d rather some readers skipped their posts than tried and commented only on the spelling :). just skip the posts that bother you. I skip most threads here because their content bothers me. i can’t say i understand all the text posts but i just skip that. yes, some basic legibility is necessary, but if it can be read in less than triple time, why not?

    SaysMe: + a lot!

As an English Literature major with a special interest in modern literature (which is comprises quite a few very articulate authors with perfect diction writing in what is apparently gibberish), I am very much opposed to enforcing the rules of a language at the expense of the authorial voice. I believe that everyone should try to at least master the necessary basics to use as a framework in which to express themselves, but never allow said rules to hamper their mode of expression. And believe me, it’s not the grammar that differentiates good writing from great writing – it’s the power of the voice.

so it’s okay to write like this, I say ^_^

I personally prefer to use proper grammar but don’t mind the mistakes others make. I do find the text-speak difficult to read though, and I find myself skipping those posts and threads. It is my choice, of course, but why put yourself in a position where people may opt out of listening to what you have to say? Do I think it is appropriate for anything beyond simple texts? No. But I don’t find it offensive. And if I was a mod, I would even offer to ‘long-hand’ it whenever I had time, as a public service. Along with adding periods and correcting thread title errors which I find bother me much more than post-errors do.

    Haifagirl,

You write that there’s a difference between a few mistakes and something unreadable. Yet, you’ve corrected very readable posts, based on minute grammatical errors such as who vs. whom.

If you really have a hard time reading a post, there’s nothing wrong with politely asking for a rewrite, but believe me, HKB’H cares more about insulting someone than about grammar and spelling.

I would just appreciate the same consideration from others.

When you say appreciate, you mean demand. You just started a petition that the mods should delete comments which don’t meet your standards.

Also, as DY said: Maybe you should weigh the harm of the bad grammar, against the way you have been insulting people here–often when they are most vulnerable. For blazes sake, you told someone looking for a job that perhaps they didn’t have a job because of their bad grammar.

I’m voting you off the island. How about that one? If we get enough votes, Haifa is off the island.

How is appreciating/even ‘demanding’ bad grammar worse than ‘voting someone off the island’?

And she has a point, seriously – an employer reviewing a resume/coverletter/speaking to someone with bad grammar is not likely to hire that person. Any career advisor would advise a person to work on that.

I’ve seen worse insults hurled around the CR without any proposed ‘voting off the island’…

How is appreciating/even ‘demanding’ bad grammar worse than ‘voting someone off the island’?

How is making fun of someone who is in a hard situation worse than trying to prevent that?

    That’s what you’re asking me?

I’ve seen worse insults hurled around the CR without any proposed ‘voting off the island’…

Here’s the difference: When I make an error, I appreciate when it’s pointed out to me. I like to improve myself. Apparently I’m the only one.

Not having my mistakes pointed out to me is hurtful to me, and what’s hurtful to me . . .

Not having my mistakes pointed out to me is hurtful to me, and what’s hurtful to me . . .

You’re totally misapplying the concept. You can’t do something to someone else which is hurtful to her, just because it’s not hurtful to you.

Also, your mistake is being pointed out to you, yet you don’t seem to taking advantage of the opportunity to improve yourself.

Really, I don’t think you’re trying to be rude and hurtful, but can’t you accept it, when a number of posters have pointed it out to you?
