Lemrick Nelson Stabbed With Ice Pick 19 Years After Stabbing Orthodox Jew To Death

A man convicted of killing a Jewish man during the infamous 1991 Crown Heights race riot was stabbed in the head with an ice pick this morning, in what cops are investigating as a road rage incident.

Lemrick Nelson was found outside his car at 168th Street and Riverside Drive at around 1 a.m., with a stab wound in his head and a bloody ice pick on the ground nearby, police said.

Nelson was taken to Harlem Hospital in stable condition.

Nelson was convicted of federal civil rights the death of Yankel Rosenbaum. Nelson, who was 16 at the time of the incident, was convicted a a dozen years later and was released from prison in 2004.

The Brooklyn riot was sparked when a Hasidic motorcade struck and killed a black child, Gavin Cato, 7. Hours later, a mob of angry black residents, including Nelson, hunted down Rosenbaum, a visiting Australian who had nothing to do with the fatal accident.

Bloody rioting, and clashes with cops, continued for days. By the end, 152 cops and 38 residents were injured, six stores were looted, and 27 police cars damaged.

Nelson has been living incognito and apparently untroubled by his past: He told the Post earlier this year that, “Up until today, I left it alone. I don’t even think about it.”

“That was 19 years ago,” he said. “I was a kid then. I made a mistake. Kids make mistakes. I’m a man now. I’ve never been in or out of trouble. I don’t live that life.”

  1. He wants to put the past behind him but never once tried to make up for what he did. Not once did he show repentance or reach out neither to the family or the community for the pain and suffering he caused. Being a teenager is not an excuse for killing someone. And as an adult and knowing better is the best reason for apologizing for inexcusable behavior.

  2. End of the day he was a stupid teenager who had just entered ninth grade and was caught in the mad hype of the riot.
I don’t know if he actually apologized or not to the family, but I hope he did, for it is disgraceful if he didn’t.

I am sorry to hear that he is in stable condition, and I wish him a long lifetime of pain and disability (not that a blow to the head would do much damage to one of Nelson YMS’s ilk).

  4. You all should be ashamed of yourself! Remember that the people of all religions are children of God, and are equal. Through belief in G_D, good deeds there is a doctrine for divine revelation and forgiveness. This young man took responsibility for his actions, paid the public price and yet YOU condemn, crucify and mock a terrible event; and eye for any eye. Remember, it follows you as well with your comments. Repent.

  5. Dear TheEssence:

What do you mean by “there is a doctrine for divine revelation”

    Can you explain that?
By the way, just curious, but are you Jewish?
