The only differnence is how the dye is harvested. When both are harvested the same way (vat dyeing or something like that) they are equally fast and adherent. Accordingly, no test will be able to tell them apart. The techeiles people perform the test after using a different process for the plant indigo and that is why it is not as strong. They base this on the claim that in the ancient times they probably did not use vat dyeing for plrant indigo.
