Unless you can prove, beyond a reasonable doubt, that the Metziyus has changed to such an extent that their statements are no longer relevant, then what they say is far more binding than just about anything else we have. To dismiss Rabbeinu Yonah as being outdated is beyond arrogant and misguided.
Also, there is a huge difference between saying that a Shittah is Dachuk and less Pashut and therefore not necessarily what we should follow when a more Pashut Shittah exists and between saying that said Shittah is invalid.
