When I repeated this puzzle at a kiddush on Shabbos, someone said that they’d heard it about a Jewish advisor (or something along those lines).
In their version, the advisor could only create the weak poison and substituted water, while the chemist didn’t figure out the advisor’s plan and died.
I only saw it on a logic puzzle thread.
