There is a tremendous machloket regarding what actually happened during the interrogations. Their lawyers and the rav of their community claim that they were tortured but a string of right-wing politicians who saw classified information claim that they were not and, moreover, they were literally plotting to foment a revolution. A list of rabbanim signed a petition demanding an investigation and another list signed a petition supporting the Shabach. BTW, Mar Zutra the Chassid also applied what the Israeli Supreme Court (Bagatz) has termed “moderate physical pressure” (Baba Metzia 24a – and see Sheeta Mekubetzet) in order to extract a confession:
