This reminds me of the joke about the conservative Committee on Jewish Laws and Standards (the one that has to have cantors as auxillary members because they at least know how to read the luach). They wanted (so the joke goes) to remove the verse ?????? ???? ???? because there are no slaves anymore. Then they decided to put it back in because without it they wouldn’t have a springboard text for the Shabbos sermon.
