Ok, this is a dating story but, not a shidduch story. When I was super duper early in the conversion process, I was at an informal Friday night service meant to bring young people to an aging shul. I met this guy there and I wasn’t that interested but, I had been catching serious slack that I was too critical (and I really shouldn’t have been dating but, no one apparently asked the rabbi before pressuring me to date.) The date was bad enough as a whole. I just wasn’t interested. I think the guy was actually trying to impress me. He told me that on Shabbos, he’s a kohein so, he travels around to the different shuls to help out with the minyan. I already wasn’t interested so, I took this and ran with it. “You’re a KOHEIN???” sounding super shocked. “What do you think you’re doing? You can’t marry me and since you can’t marry me, why are you dating me?? Unless….” I put on the most horrified act when really I was doing the happy dance inside because I didn’t like this guy and I totally had an out. So, anyway he says, “No! No! No! I swear, I’m not like that. I’m a good guy.” I saw one of the (Owner? Mashgiach?) trying to keep a straight face. You really have to hear the “No! No! No!” It was so panicked. Nope, didn’t go out with him again but, I have run into to him about four more times always in the same part of Manhattan even though he is supposedly from Long Island.
