This isnt exactly true.
for example take the following not uncommon scenario:
Patient with cancer is in an immunosuppressed state develops pneumonia leads to septic shock whcih results in renal failure leading to hyperkalemia nad then cardiac arrest.
I can reasonably write any of the following on a death certificate as the “cause of death”:
– cancer
– pneumonia
– septic shock
– Acute renal failure
– hyperkalemia
– cardiac arrest
Usually I will include a few of the above , and the form does leave a few lines for chain of events for thsi very reason
