While Trump has alienated the “core” of the Republican party (which going back to Reagan favored an aggressive foreign policy, fiscal responsibility, free trade and support for immigration, if only as a source of cheap labor), Trump has his own base, and the Democrats appear more likely to pick a radical left-winger who will alienate much of the Democratic and Independent electorate. In an election that is about “the lesser of two evils”, it is hard to predict the outcome, and there is an opportunity for a middle-of-the-road third party sounding like what both major parties sounded like in the 20th century (when everyone complained they sounded alike).
