Dear Reb Eliezer,
Voltaire was saying that even an atheist would have to admit that it is easier to rationalize that there is a god, even if it is true that there is no God.
The constitution requires at least some internal reckoning on the part of the individual. Same as any moral contract. The part of civilization that encourages us toward a self reckoning we call religion. Where has all the religious leadership gone? In the Sixties, the civil rights leaders were mostly ministers. Clergy had a tremendous impact on american culture. To the extent that the man on the streets political involvement was at the behest of his religious leadership. There is none of that now. So, thinking Americans self reckon about the constitution in accordance with the extant of their education. Which is another topic….
Bottom line. If the religious have problems with American culture today, it because Americans had problems with the religious activities of yesterday.
