The Republican Party has changed greatly in my adult lifetime. Gone are the northeast liberal wing (Rockefeller, Keating, Lindsay, Weicker, etc). It was hijacked to the right by the evangelicals (Moral Majority) and the gun toting white supremacists. Today they leave no room in the party for differing viewpoints.
I sit on a Democratic Town Committee, which doesn’t lean to the left. Most don;t support, women’s abortion rights, school vouchers, forcing low income housing into the suburbs, affirmative action. 100% support a national health plan, social security, medicare, medicaid, SNAP, WIC, DACA.
Many members had parents or grandparents who arrived illegally and made a life in the US, but as white Europeans, it was easier yo pass., marry a citizen and remain.
