The select busses which you have to purchase a fare ticket from the machines at the bus stop before you board. You are obligated to keep the receipt as proof. Sometimes they check on the bus but many times they(MTA inspectors) wait at the bus stop and ask random people to show the receipt when they de-board the bus. Why does someone need to take from their time to show proof? Once they are off the bus they are off so they arent catching you riding the bus for free you arent on the bus anymore arent you just free to go about your day? Apparently they interrogate people and give fine and court summons to those who dont have the receipt. What if you lost the receipt or whatever other reason?
Doesnt it work on the LIRR in a way that if you dont have a receipt for fare you just get off at the next stop? How can they fine you on the spot just for not having the bus fare receipt? Especially to wait after you leave the bus is that even legal? Are you obligated to cooperate?
