As of June 30th , the average price of a dozen Grade A large eggs in the U.S. was $2.86, according to Federal Reserve economic data. This is up about 16% from prices a year ago. The Department of Agriculture has explained that egg prices have risen this year because of an inconsistent supply of eggs due to multiple factors, the most important of which are a major outbreak of Avian Flu (resulting in destruction of hundreds of thousands of chickens), increased energy costs for egg producers and labor shortages.
