In times gone by, and as codified in Shulchan Oruch (of Baid Yosef), if a religious Jew hears the denigration of a Gadol, he is obligated to rend his clothing (kriya) in mourning of hearing such vile words. Nowadays, we do not tear our clothes (as one possek explained, due to the prevalence of such misbehavior, if we needed to tear our clothes each time we hear such obscenities, we would always be wearing torn clothing). When someone denigrates a Godol, it harms ALL of us. It should cause us to tear our clothes and mourn the bizayon of Torah. Instead, some of us have “evolved’ to worry about the “harm” of the perpetrator and seek to preserve HIS honor. Progressive Jews in Action.
