In terms of the hat issue-JFK was the first president in history not to wear a hat in public. He went out on a limb, trying to create a new fad. It caught on, but that does not take away from the inherent chashivus of wearing a head covering.People wore hats for thousands of years. That is why we wear hats even though it is not the current “style”.
