Nowadays there are just NO jobs to be had and there is NO reason to take a job that
pays less than benefits in a messed up system like this. I know it SHOULD NOT be that way but it is the way it IS. When something bad happens, there is nothing wrong with having to get benefits if that is the only way you can survive. It is why you paid into the system in the first place.
Itzik, I agree that the services are there in times to help us out. And I don’t have a problem with people taking services to get through tough times. But I do have a problem when people won’t take jobs that “are below them.” Someone I know used to make $500k a year, got fired and recently turned down a job that pays $100k. It wasn’t enough for him. I don’t know of any social services that equal $100k for a family of 4. Granted his case might be a bit extreme…but I’ve heard of a few cases like this.
I also dont have trouble with families taking tzedaka – if they need it! Thats what tzedaka organizations are for. But it would be nice if people made the effort.
The other issue is that without money coming into the Jewish community, less people can afford Yeshiva tuition. It becomes more and more of a burden for the people who still have jobs but dont have much room in the budget.
Also, Con Ed is often hiring. You start at a low rate (around $15/hr) but within 6 months you get great benefits and guaranteed raises twice a year. Many people dont even want to try for that because its “low paid.” Con Ed even trains you fully in many positions! Other utilities are hiring also. There are a lot of frum people that workfor Con Ed (but mainly management not Union).
