There are many lonely people in this world who seek online company annonymously for one reason or another. There are many housebound people, disabled, unwell people who seek to pass a few hours in their lonely week.
Not everyone who posts here on a regular basis throughout the day is necessarily out of work or has been fired and even of they were, allow them the opportunity to lighten up their day without being hurtful or embarrassing.
January 27, 2009 10:10 am at 10:10 am #635085PhyllisMemberasdfghjkl, why are u asking, do u want to see ur name on that list. I’ll give u the pleasure right now. YOUR NAME IS THE ONE SHE ALWAYS SEES.
January 27, 2009 4:36 pm at 4:36 pm #635086squeakParticipantI started a thread with the same idea a week or so ago. Namely, I started to notice a number of frum family men who lost their job and others who were in danger of it. I am hoping that if anyone has a random lead for a breadwinner job they can post what they know and maybe some good will come of it.
January 27, 2009 4:51 pm at 4:51 pm #635087flatbush27Memberdrinking coffee in the coffee room should definitely earn you a bonus if we got paid for posting

I would recommend if a breadwinner lost their job, to take any job that they can. Even if it won’t fully support them, it is better than having NO money coming in. Yes, this might mean being a cashier at Target, or becoming part of a construction crew.
January 27, 2009 9:25 pm at 9:25 pm #635089areivimzehlazehParticipantSJS- easy to talk…
I know someone that just got laid off. He was at the top of the company, raking it in, had all the power in his hands… all gone. I can definitely see him scanning my groceries.

So he would rather take tzedaka than get a job? His life savings wont last very long and there has to be some way to provide for the family. Food costs money. Running water costs money. Electricity costs money.
I didn’t say it wasn’t a huge step down, but sometimes you need to do what you can to feed your family. Taking tzedaka should only come when you CANNOT get food or other basic neccesities in other ways.
January 27, 2009 10:37 pm at 10:37 pm #635091areivimzehlazehParticipantSJS- in theory, your opinion sounds great. But in practice…. I hope you never have to know
January 27, 2009 10:38 pm at 10:38 pm #635092squeakParticipantSJS, switching professions after a job loss makes it more difficult to obtain a replacement job in the same field.
Exactly. Though, as an engineer your alternate career opportunities are unlimited. Everyone is an engineer of something nowadays (e.g. a product packing engineer)

SJSinNYC, Target has cashiers laid off from Circuit City to choose from. They won’t hire someone without experience in a market like this. And try to do construction or other blue collar work if you are not a union man or an illegal – as if anyone is building now!
Nowadays there are just NO jobs to be had and there is NO reason to take a job that
pays less than benefits in a messed up system like this. I know it SHOULD NOT be that way but it is the way it IS. When something bad happens, there is nothing wrong with having to get benefits if that is the only way you can survive. It is why you paid into the system in the first place.
Besides, we pay taxes and give tzedaka so that decent people are helped in crises like this – we don’t pay taxes so a welfare mother can raise 5 kids who grow up to rob our houses and we don’t give tzedoko to phoney organizations with huge budgets that do very little for anyone or to build huge fancy shuls with 3 inch mechitzas that turn people away for lack of membership dues.

January 28, 2009 4:07 pm at 4:07 pm #635099NobodyMemberSJSinNYC you comments : I would recommend if a breadwinner lost their job, to take any job that they can. The above is incorrect for several reasons. The Gemoroh is very clear that if a man is used to drinking wine and eating meat with every meal you must ensure this is kept up. We learn from this Gemoroh the importance of protecting a person’s status in order not to cause humiliation.
Second to suggest a man of a certain status should work on a construction site is ridiculous. It is all very well to give reccommendations out but please think them through first. Your suggestions are highly impractical and have not been given any thought. There are rules, regulations and Unions. You don’t just get a job and there are truly very few jobs about offering a wage to even partially cover a Jewish way of life.
Thank G-d there are genuine erhlich tzedokohs who will go out of their way to help those in need. Just look at Tomchei Shabbos – look at what they do the whole week for familes, not just shabbos. They do more than they need to because that is what tzedokoh is all about. Real charity is helping those who need it in times of hardship not paying for a brass plaque in a shul costing a few thousand dollars saying what a great donor to the shul so and so is.

I hate to disagree with you, but there is offen a Gemorah in Pesachim 113a (also BB 110a) that is against you, and says one should take any job, even one disgusting and extremely menial, rather than taking Tzedaka.
Walking into Wal-Mart and filling out an application is (in general) a possibility.
Of course, Kollel is probably a better paying option (taking into account Klei Kodesh discounts, no supervision, unlimited sick leave and better hours!)
January 28, 2009 5:01 pm at 5:01 pm #635101rikMemberWhen someone is laid off they can get unemployment for the first little bit while they try to find something that can work for them. Most times its not even worth it to become a cashier in Wal-Mart!
Of course if unemployment takes years to process, like it did in my case, then its worth it to take any job you can get just to survive.
January 28, 2009 6:00 pm at 6:00 pm #635102NobodyMemberGavra: I would not like to see a Rebbi or a senior teacher packing my groceries in Walmart nor would I like to see my accountant tending to my garden. I also would feel very uncomfortable to see any person of a certain position and standing in the community doing work which may cause embarrassment to them or their families. I would and do happily give tzedakah in the hope that their dignity can be preserved duing hardship.
Not working can also cause embarrassment but unpaid / voluntary work and a little help on the side goes a long way.
I cannot say I know the particular Gemorah to which you refer, I’ll check it out but I do know to the one to which I refer and I am happy to follow this line.
Aside from arguing on Gemorah it is good to agree and disagree on various topics that’s what makes life so colorful so I will say, on this subject I am happy to disagree with you for the reasons above.
May Hashem provide for every man parnosoh to put bread on his table and shoes on his kids feet and most importantly a roof over his head.
January 28, 2009 6:19 pm at 6:19 pm #635103gavra_at_workParticipantNobody:
Amen!
BTW, The Gemoros do not argue. Even if the former wealthy individual goes back to work but can not keep his prior standards, it is a mitzva to give him tzedoka to help pick him up. He should try hard not to take it, but is allowed to do so if needed.
On another of your points, an unpaid internship is always good experience, and can (and has) turned into a paying intership and/or a job.

Yes and it is also an exercise in futility with all the layoffs of experienced people in the beleaguered (and IMHO bloated with far too many me-toos) retail sector in the US.

Itzik, I agree that the services are there in times to help us out. And I don’t have a problem with people taking services to get through tough times. But I do have a problem when people won’t take jobs that “are below them.” Someone I know used to make $500k a year, got fired and recently turned down a job that pays $100k. It wasn’t enough for him. I don’t know of any social services that equal $100k for a family of 4. Granted his case might be a bit extreme…but I’ve heard of a few cases like this.
I also dont have trouble with families taking tzedaka – if they need it! Thats what tzedaka organizations are for. But it would be nice if people made the effort.
The other issue is that without money coming into the Jewish community, less people can afford Yeshiva tuition. It becomes more and more of a burden for the people who still have jobs but dont have much room in the budget.
Also, Con Ed is often hiring. You start at a low rate (around $15/hr) but within 6 months you get great benefits and guaranteed raises twice a year. Many people dont even want to try for that because its “low paid.” Con Ed even trains you fully in many positions! Other utilities are hiring also. There are a lot of frum people that workfor Con Ed (but mainly management not Union).
January 28, 2009 8:24 pm at 8:24 pm #635106anon for thisParticipantSJS,
This is an off-topic hijack, but your post made me wonder about something. I once worked for a telephone utility in a management (that is, non-union) position. We were told that in the event of a CWA (Communication Workers of America) strike, we would be expected to take over the unionized workers jobs until the strike was settled (depending on our training, jobs such as line repair or customer service). Is there a similar expectation at Con Ed?
January 28, 2009 8:44 pm at 8:44 pm #635107SJSinNYCMemberAnon yes! That happened last summer when the union contract went into negotitations. We were required to cancel all vacations and we would have been working 12 hour shifts every day (obviously I would have gotten off for shabbos) and need to stay on site if requested. Thankfully, they extended the deadline and worked out a contract.
January 28, 2009 8:45 pm at 8:45 pm #635108gavra_at_workParticipantIt seems to be normal for union shops (have management take over during a strike). Almost happened a couple of months ago by us.
January 28, 2009 8:54 pm at 8:54 pm #635109anon for thisParticipantSJS,
Thanks for the quick reply. I suppose you are safe then for a couple of years until the next contract talks (is it IBEW?)
One caveat to your statement that someone should take any job available to support a family is that the job must cover work-associated expenses. When I was the primary breadwinner (my husband was in training & his salary was not large) & looking for a job, I had to make sure it would cover childcare & transportation costs. These expenses (especially childcare) can be significant, so it really wouldn’t have been worthwhile for me to take a job bagging groceries. I realize that’s not the case for most people though.
January 28, 2009 9:13 pm at 9:13 pm #635110SJSinNYCMemberAnon you are correct. My childcare is $185/week which is “cheap” where I live. Plus about $200 to commute a month. its about $1,000 month of after tax money.

Someone like that probably has considerable savings even to the point that he can take advantage of his time off to learn a new skill or try to open a new business. He also can use those savings (and severance pay) to wait until he gets something closer to his pay range which he may want also because it would be a black mark on his resume if he takes a job beneath him (unless it is with a non profit and that is why the salary is lower). That is not someone who ends up on welfare or depending on tzedoko.
January 28, 2009 10:03 pm at 10:03 pm #635112SJSinNYCMemberThat is not someone who ends up on welfare or depending on tzedoko.
I think he applied for state health insurance for his kids (which his new job would have covered).
when the economy recovers, I doubt anyone would fault someone for “getting a job to support his family.” People take career breaks all the time and it works out fine.
January 28, 2009 10:20 pm at 10:20 pm #635113Itzik_sMemberBS”D
And how much tax did he pay to the state over the years? Sorry but it is coming to him especially in the socialized economy of today. Why should he pay so much and not get something back when the government that he supported says he can?
Besides, just because he applied does not mean he gets it.

If you’ve read any other threads then you will know that some CR members are in college and or have jobs.
I know from some people that work in certain fields due to the economy things are pretty bad and they literally have no buissness. There for they have a little bit more time on their hands- better them here then on some other place full of shmutz-
Btw nobody here gets paid to post.People come here to see what is going on around the world and to relax or to just get their minds off of things.
If you feel that the CR is not your speed then what on earth are you doing here?

The begging of your post seemed to be quite mocking to me at first.
Your comment was like somone was saying to a person who dosen’t have children- do you have children? Well why not? Is that why your always on vacation?Your house is so neat no children to mess it up.-You may be joking but the person who dosen’t have children will be hurt inside.
