I think this attitude Itzik_s describes re: shidduchim is an extension of the general attitude among many people that only those who are look, dress, live, and behave exactly as they do are completely trustworthy and truly frum. If that’s the attitude people have towards their neighbors and children’s classmates, it’s not surprising they would expect at least at much from their son’s/ daughter’s future spouse.
