In the case you describe, I don’t think anyone would disagree it would have been perfectly fine to use English. Why DID he use a language he had trouble with? Just because a certain thing may be ideal doesn’t mean it is always appropriate. And I don’t see how you can blame others for his choice. Perhaps there is an element to the story you were unfamiliar with?
