Most suicides nowadays are attributed to emotional illness – that a person would have to be out of his mind with grief, to take such a drastic step. There are cases where suicide was not looked upon as an aveira. The story of the woman who was kidnaped onto a ship and asked a shailah (I guess a rov was also captured there), that if she were to jump overboard (rather than be defiled), would she lose her share of Olam Haba, and the rov said no, and she jumped into the ocean.
