Was he not a “Rabbi” because he lacked it, despite him being a Rosh Yeshiva and author of the Sefer Chofetz Chaim and Mishna Berura? There is no such thing as real semicha anymore. You can be a rabbi, tzaddik, and talmid chochom without semicha, or rasha with semicha.
