The point is NOT to get drunk, the point is to loosen your inhibitions.
When my father drinks he says a mymer which he wrote himself. When I drink I lose my inhibitions of getting involved in torah discussions. I now reiterate that the point is NOT to get drunk in the sense of getting slammed/stoned/or whatever other synonymous term you would like to use. One is supposed to drink more than what they are used to, to the point that they will feel the effects of the wine, loosening inhibition but not to the point of total inebriation. People unfortunately have taken the extreme in getting drunk to the point that one is supposed to drink to oblivion and this is not proper at all. If one loses control (I have seen quite a few wives who left by the purim seuda in yeshivah with looks of fear in their eyes because they never now what will happen) in that he doesn’t know what he is doing then he has gone too far.
