ive seen:

earthquake, shifting of tetonic plates (in my opinion the most reasonable)

localized wind inversion

concentrated tidal forces of an unusual planetary and moon alignment

i hate to break it to you but your professors explanation, although possible (anything is “possible”, its even possible that oj is not a killer), is trillions of orders of magnitude less likely than any other explanation.
