It seems that people get bored with the same type of fundraiser year after year. Fund raising committees really have to put on their thinking caps to come up with something different. I know that at my shul, for the past 2 years, they have held a “lottery”. Tickets are 100.00 and you get 2 tickets to a “gourmet” brunch and entry into the lottery. All the tickets are drawn and numbers 1, 18, 36, 54, etc. get a cash prize of various denominations – none less than 100.00. Only 300 tickets are sold. They have done quite well with this function and I do believe that if you just asked 300 members to donate 100.00, the response would be a lot different. I think people are looking for “something” in return for their donation or they are just jaded at the usual ways of raising money. These more exotic ways of raising money are definitely a lot more work for the same return, but I don’t see anything wrong with it.
