We are syrian, and if someone suggests an ashkenaz shidduch, as long as the person is jewish and has fine middot, we have no qualms about that, when the time comes. And I know many prominet syrian Rabbonim in the community whose own families have intermarried with ashkenazim. So Moshe Kohn, maybe this syrian friend has his own mindset, but it is rare.
