I think a BAR MITZVAH as practiced today is also a Post WW II American institution .
An older gentlemen told me in his day. Bar Mitzvah was he got an Aliyah on a Monday or Thursday (Not even Shabbos) and was allowed a shot of Schnapps after davening and that was it (Along with the Bracha by his father)
