Bear in mind that Torah observance in 150 BCE was a little different (okay, a lot different) than today. The Hasmoneans by and large were publicly observant but were either indifferent or actually hostile to Rabbinic Judaism. Note that the most successful Hasmonean king, Alexander Yanai, killed 50,000 talmidei chachamim.
