Choppy: I was told by a very reliable and elderly source that the word “Chofshi” was deliberate because it could mean free from religion for the secularists but it was also meant to be M’ramez “Ein Nikra Chofshi Ela Mi Sheosek Batorah”. I was very, very impressed when I heard that. And even if that was not the author/composer’s intent, it’s certainly what I think of whenever I hear it.
