Did you read the second half of that sentence? I’ll run it by you again: “…but it is clear from the rest of their interactions with others that it is in the context of civil exchange.” I don’t know about you, but in real life, I find that very many times people engage in humor that playfully pokes fun at someone, very often a sibling or a close friend. The point is that they are doing it in a context of mutual respect and acknowledgment, which makes such interactions agreeable to both parties. Obviously, if you do not have that context, then the jibe is nothing more than an insult. But if you are not comfortable with that type of humor, fine – just realize that it is a very common and legitimate way for people to interact.
