SSA, I don’t think elected leaders are included in the halachois of kings.
Somehting about taking off your shoes does ring a bell, but i think it is only when you ask mechila, and probably only someone who has real semicha.
Are you sefardic by any chance? I think sefardim are much more stringent about halachois of kevoid chachomim.
