Correct. If we had Gedolim who were pro-active, then they would have worked out a compromise with Bibi & Lapid, and they would have gotten a better outcome. Imagine if the Chazon Ish would have insisted that all Charaidim remain out of the state (the original shitta), and what Torah would look like!

I don’t think they are trying to “illegitimize” Charaidim, but rather to find a way to stop paying for their choices.

Agreed. There is a reason why women are what they are, Hashem made them that way. An outside viewer who does not see why Hashem said that women can not be an Eid (or similar) could conclude that there is bigotry/misogyny involved.
