The only parallel that could be made between learning in kollel and scholarship in the humanities is that no one thinks it is worthwhile except the people who value such knowledge, and there are lots of people who would be relieved to see you “snap out of it” and get a “real” job. But as for scholarship in the humanities, there are no free lunches whatsoever, and even at the top of the food chain (which few manage to reach), there’s a tremendous pressure to keep your name in publication. So I have heard from the English chair of my college (I’m an English major).
