What?!? You’re accusing me now of being one of those??? Nope. I don’t really want to reveal my age, but I’m slightly younger than 1,980 (or something) years of age.

I loved this specific gemara because of its mysterious whereabouts. (not written outright in bavli- it’s brought down by the hagaos in sanhedrin 43a). I also thought of Mathew, but in regards to others – maybe their names weren’t pronounced the way the tanaim knew them, or we killed them off before they became famous – before the goyim made them their “luminaries ” for their religion. So it can be that these were his talmidim that are unknown to us nowadays or just identified by goyim under different names. Or it could be right names but we don’t know enough of their religion ( I hope) to recognize them.

I don’t think it’s 5 out of the 12 because the Hebrew names are known for most of them.

Presumably these are (potentially not-nice) nicknames, not actual names, so the famous ones might be in here. Or this could be assuming the famous “nonexistent” Rashi about those three.

    Those three weren’t killed, though.

By the way that Rashi is confirmed by Sefer Chassidim 192.

HaLeiVi: Right. That was the “or”. They didn’t die, so they don’t get mentioned here.

I’ve heard that Nakai is Luke and Toda or tavda (depending on the nekudos) is Thaddeus. Don’t know the rest.

I don’t assume any connection between the OP maaseh in Sanhedrin and -lehavdil- the stories that were written hundreds of years later.

Why are you giving any credence to them?

I think you’ll have a close to impossible time reconciling this gemara with the version found in the New Testament. I always wanted to claim that Netzer is really Yoshke, who was called Yeshu Hanotzri, and the pesukim fit. (The first pasuk is about Mashiach, and the second pasuk is that they came to his grave a few days after he was killed and couldn’t find his body.) But I don’t really think this theory is emes. Teiku.

MDG: Meh. In these Inyanim (and certainly these that underwent much self-censorship) I see no reason to ask a Kashya on the Gemara from history. The point of it is far more important than the historical accuracy.
