I have been thinking a lot about the storm this week out on the East Coast, and what message I can take out of it. Hashem doesn’t do something without a reason, without a meaning. Everything in the world, everything that our holy eyes see, its Hashem in front of us at all times. Some people ask, how can I see Hashem in front of me in my life all the time? The truth is, He IS in front of you at all times. Every person you speak to is a creation of Hashem Yisbarech, every tree, every blade of grass, every animal, every cloud, every star.. the list can go on forever. He is right there. It’s your choice whether you want to see Hashem there or not. To mamesh see his kedusha in every single thing. So this storm… Ah, there is so much that I want to say. Hashem showered an enormous amount of rain into the world. What is rain? Water. We tovel ourselves in the mikveh with rain water. It purifies. Hashem is getting the world ready for the coming of Moshiach! He made the whole East Coast into one tremendous Mikveh. Water is compared to Torah. Just like the ground thirsts from water, our neshamos thirst for Torah. After a rainfall, the soil is fed and we see the trees and flowers grow and their colors are rich. After yidden learn Torah, we become refined, beautiful, holy, closer to HaKadosh Baruch Hu. When Moshiach comes, we will be able to reach that ultimate closeness! When it rains, the clouds come out, the sky gets dark and we are filled with a gloomy feeling. But after a storm, the air is fresh and clean, the skies are clear, and the sun beams its beautiful light on to the world. After the hurricane, we were blessed with the most beautiful sunset. Hashem painted the sky with some of the most beautiful colors. Hashem is the master artist of the entire world. He knows exactly what colors to use and where to put them, whether it is in the sky or in our personal lives. The skies were dark, but after the darkness comes light. We have been in galus for so many years, there is mamesh so much darkness. Soon, very soon, the world will see Hashems tremendous light. Just like we saw His greatness this week, IY”H it will soon be revealed throughout the entire world!

A hurricane is a disaster. 45 people died from it and a few were Frum Yidden. Families are homeless many homes sustained considerable damage. The cost of the destruction is in the Billions of $$.

Yes there was much Chessed as it could have been worse but there’s no doubt the hurricane is a big “potch” from Hashem to wake us up and show us how this world is His and was created and is sustained by Him for mans good as long as they do His will. This world is temporary and He can wipe it out in a second if He so chooses if He finds that we aren’t using the world as He designed it.

For sure WIY. It was definitely a wake up call. We saw that we weren’t in control at all. That there is only so much we can do with our own hishtadlus and after that we just throw our hands up to Hashem. Let’s use that wake up call in this month of Elul, do teshuva, and get closer to Hashem so He doesnt need to send another.

The Medrash (I cannot remember where, much to my chagrin) says, that every once in a while Hashem brings about some great natural disaster to show that He is boss.

Even though there are many who don’t believe in Hashem r”l, they also learn to realize that they are not in control and that they have to submit to a larger power.

Perhaps I am looking in the wrong direction, but I presume Hashem knows what he is doing, and if disasters are indeed messages or tests, they are so for humankind.

To paraphrase Ed Koch, “how’m I doing?”

In a huge hurricane that would have killed hundreds or thousands only a few score years ago, only about 40 people died. A handful of Jews died, mostly while trying to save the lives of others. There was relatively little property damage, in comparison, due to improved building codes and methods. Storm prediction was splendid, so we all had days to prepare. People worked together to aid each other, and they heeded the advice of the very knowledgable emergency management authorities. All in all, suffering and inconvenience was minimized.

This is truly the result of humans continuing the work of creation and helping to repair the world.

Earlier this summer I saw thousands of people volunteer in the search for Leiby. Most were Jews, but there were oeople there of many different skin hues and backgrounds. The results were still disastrous, but I saw great hope in the way so many people pulled together in hope of averting a disaster.

Am I the only person who gets hope from these ‘potches’ and sees that if we are being tested, we have behaved admirably?
