How would you say you disagreed with someone over something in a more positive way? I guess I could say difference of opinion, but is there any other way of saying it that doesn’t have any negitive connotations?

Why in the world would you be asking ME? I’m not known to argue civilly.

    1) I opine to differ

    2) Might I state an opposing view

    3) Would you consider

    4) I respectfully beg to disagree

Don’t actually say you disagree. Just state your opinion. For example: Hmmm, that’s interesting. I always thought…

I don’t see how saying “I disagree” has any negative connotation. Obviously, if you intent is to offend or antagonize, then that will come through, regardless of how you state it. But just saying you don’t agree in a respectful manner seems perfectly reasonable.

Disagree without being disagreeable. But, you can say, might we consider the possibility of viewing this from another standpoint? Or, perhaps there is an alternative way to understand this idea.

Reminds me of a conversation I had with a student this week.

Him: You probably disagree with me, but Arafat was a great man.

Me: You’re right. I disagree with you.

“I have a somewhat different interpretation.”

    “That’s a good one.”

Haifagirl, you prove once again that grammarians are kind, courteous, civilized people.

Somebody else would probably have shot him.

And to the OP, that would certainly be a way of responding without any of the negative verbal connotations that distress you.

    1) It’s considered bad form to shoot one’s students.

    2) He’s got good connections that could be helpful to me someday.
