There are three kinds of trolls:
This thread falls somewhere in between (1) and (3)…
April 5, 2012 7:01 pm at 7:01 pm #866675sheinMember(2) isn’t a troll. If someone has, what you think is, an extreme position, he is entitled to it. And entitled to defend it. If a Neturai Karta fan is a member here and starts a thread about how we should befriend the Arabs and give them political control over the State of Israel, he is not a troll but rather merely expressing his sincerely held beliefs. Which he is entitled to. Whether you like it or not. And whether you agree with it or not.
April 5, 2012 7:07 pm at 7:07 pm #866676OneOfManyParticipantHey, number three sounds kinda fun… >D
I have a theory about trolls that I’ve been cogitating over for a while (ever since the CoreyToTheTroll incident). I think that it’s entirely possible (though how probably, I don’t know) for someone to be a wicked evil troll without even realizing it. I mean, it’s an anonymous frum forum – it’s only natural to want to discuss all sorts of controversial topics that are sort of taboo in regular conversation. Also, people sort of disconnect online communication from real life (which may be why people have no qualms about rudeness here), so they probably don’t even think about the fact that randomly barging in and rabble rousing is very annoying and rude. Though truthfully, I don’t think this applies to most trolls (here, at least). Just a possibility.

April 5, 2012 9:49 pm at 9:49 pm #866680yitayningwutParticipantshein –
I have nothing against free speech. You missed the word “disingenuously.” (2) is someone who keeps arguing an extreme position because they enjoy driving people up the wall, not because they believe in it.
OneOfMany –
Hmm, interesting theory. Though I think that some swift retribution (I advocated flogging on another thread) might teach them quickly just how rude and annoying they are.
April 5, 2012 9:57 pm at 9:57 pm #866681sheinMemberyitayningwat-
So you are divining intentions too? What you think is disingenuous can easily be sincere.
April 5, 2012 9:57 pm at 9:57 pm #866682yitayningwutParticipantlakewhut – Nah, I’m just a closet admirer.
April 5, 2012 10:17 pm at 10:17 pm #866683OneOfManyParticipantshein: I don’t think that’s true. Trolliness isn’t inherent to the opinion itself – it’s in the way and to whom it’s presented. Everyone’s entitled to an extreme opinion, but if they purposely blast it in dissenters’ faces in a really gratuitous way, like by starting threads for no other reason than to have people argue with them, then they’re trolling. Even if they sincerely believe in their opinions. It’s something called tact. In real life, lack of tact makes you a boor – here, it makes you a troll.
April 5, 2012 10:45 pm at 10:45 pm #866684yitayningwutParticipantshein – What OneOfMany said. Also, sometimes it eventually becomes clear that the poster is full of it.
April 6, 2012 4:51 am at 4:51 am #866685dash™ParticipantYou have to admit, it is a good question.
April 6, 2012 10:10 pm at 10:10 pm #866686yitayningwutParticipantThere is also another kind of troll, and that is the good troll.
The good troll is similar to (2) in many ways, but there are very important distinctions between them. Good trolls are a) open about their trolliness; b) do so in good nature; and c) will not push it too far (such as to make a troll comment in the middle of a very sensitive discussion). They are trolls in the manner that they will not hesitate to make exaggerated, facetious comments, even about serious matters. The key difference between them and the bad trolls is that those who have been around the good trolls are fully aware that their trolliness is simply a form of satire.
Anyone considering the path of the good troll needs to consider that the line between a comedian and a complete moron is very thin. And even comedy sometimes gets annoying. So use with caution.
