Maybe someone can give me some sagely advice.

My morning chavrusa has been unwell for the past few mornings. But suddenly when he has to go to work in the afternoon he feels fine!

Any ideas how I can deal with this situation? What can I do? What can I say?

First of all, is he really feeling fine? I’ve gone to work feeling like death because I didn’t have a choice. Maybe he’s doing the same thing.

In any case, when you find out he’s about to go to work, you can tell him you’re happy he’s feeling a bit better than he was in the morning and you can’t wait until he’s feeling well enough to go back to learning with you. If you want to push it, you can ask him for an estimated date when that will happen.

You can also ask him if there is anything you can do for him.

totally OT, I never thought Gateshead jews would call themselves a “Geordie”

I didnt think they wanted to associate themselves with the rest of Newcastle

1: Perhaps he goes to work despite being sick, because he feels he has no choice but to.

2: Perhaps he isnt sick, but sick and tired (of learning with you) and he really doesnt know how to tell you without hurting your feelings so he is using this as an excuse.

3: Perhaps he really has a hard time getting up in the morning, despite a wonderful chavrusa and chabura and he needs a little chizuk in this area.

If this has been going on for say a week or two, I would tell him straight out, that you will be starting with a new chavrusa (or looking for one depending on how close you are or how easy it is to get a new one) while he is out sick and once he is better, he can join the 2 of you. In the meantime, since it is only a couple of mornings I would go with option 1.

Seriosuly from what I know about gatesheads, its very dreary and drab there especially in the morning (Ive only been to London , not Newcastle) and I can see that affecting someone in the morning

there are things that make people feel worst in the morning but ok later on in the day. Maybe he’s not sleeping well and really feels not well in the morning. Maybe he’s suffering from a bout of IBS which is worse in the morning. Why not be dan l’kaf zchus? If it goes on, just ask him what he would like to do about your seder- if he wants to cancel or wait til he’s better.

Solid early AM chavrusas do not quite grow on trees. It’s more a matter of mazel, and sometimes even more mazal than a shidduch.

It’s just been a few mornings? Live with it. If it becomes a reoccurring problem, then get a new chavrusa.

Chavrusa’s are a dime a dozen, and basically grow on trees.

Actually Medrash Aicha says on the passuk ??? ???? ???? ???? ?? ?? ???? ?????, a person stands a whole day on his feet in work and does not tire. Yet his friend begs him to teach him one perek and he says he’s too tired.

    It’s an old story…

(Just kidding. It certainly depends on the matzav, the person, the circumstances. Cannot be analyzed by our professional staff here in one “blick”)

    to add:

Sometimes a truly good chavrusa is worth a bit of patience. ??? ?? ???, with forbearance, patience.

Aaron: At the risk of getting stoned, I would say that the pool of potential early-morning chavrusos, and the pool of those eligible for morning sickess, do not overlap.
