Let’s see who gets that reference.
I’m the Rashbak, a name I took on in yeshiva because it’s the only acronym not taken (Rashi, Rashba, Rosh, Rashash, Ritva, Rivad, Radok…). I’m a former Brooklynite who moved out 7 years ago to get married and live in the genteel city of Atlanta (now I live in a suburb north of Atlanta, trying to grow an orthodox kehillah).
It’s fun to leave the fishbowl of New York and look back. Some of you think Lakewood is “out of town,” woah! I’ll be blunt, y’all entertain me sometimes.
I’ve been reading the forums on YWN for a number of months. Some of it is enlightening, some of is repulsive… but in an enlightening way, (“wow, people really do believe that.”) If you want to know my positions on things religious, political or food, just ask. If not… then I’ll sit here quietly.
Anyway, I’ll post from time to time if I have something meaningful to say or ask.
Wishing you all a Shana Tovah, a g’bentched yar and ale gitte zachen!
The Rashbak
Side note: Today is my grandmother’s 15th yahrtzeit (Shaindel bas HaRav Yitchak). So if you’re learning, saying tehillim or saying kaddish, please have her in mind. I’m happy to do the same for you. She was a Midwood resident for decades (between Ave. J and K) and a great tzedekes who is still greatly missed. Thank you.

So, tell us, voos hertzach in Atlanta Georgia??

September 12, 2012 8:40 pm at 8:40 pm #896520The RashbakMemberRabbi Sinclair at Ohr Somayach tells of how he became orthodox… he was dragged to a shacharis minyan to be a “tzenter” so someone could say kaddish. As he said, “we finished praying, and then they opened the bar.” So I’d enjoy a schnapps during working hours. Thank you :-).
Atlanta is warm and sunny. We have the perfect Sukkos weather. Not too hot anymore, and never cold. Kosher food could get scarce. B’H one Costco carries glatt kosher meat now. And grape juice is a steal! I still drive up to Brooklyn with my father a few times a year to go grocery shopping. I”YH, I’ll be in Brooklyn for Chol Hamoed.
Our little community in the suburbs is fighting over where and whether to have a communal Rosh Hashanah dinner on Sunday night. What was supposed to be 5 families sharing the cooking turned into 60 people wanting to freeload. They come for the food, not the davening (like, we start Mincha at 7, they’ll show up around 9).
I’m getting my shofar warmed up. My 7th year in a row as baal tokeah! And I’m trying to write my drasha for Rosh Hashanah. We don’t have a rabbi (we did, he got bought out by another shul). Any thoughts on topics would be appreciated. I covered all the basics the last few years.
Do other people’s kids come home from school each day with new Rosh Hashanah songs?
And the Subject is from an old Austin Powers movie.
September 12, 2012 9:32 pm at 9:32 pm #896521Amazing! I hope you succeed in building up a real kehilla there. With the increasing number of Orthodox/frum people, it is only logical that there should be more places with kehillos. No need for everyone to be living in a handful of giant monster kehillos (aka Lakewood, Brooklyn etc).

September 13, 2012 10:52 am at 10:52 am #896524147ParticipantThe Rashbak:- Please note that this is only the 2nd time that there is Kerias haTorah on your Granny’s Johrzeit, the last time having been her very 1st Johrzeit in 1998.
Your Granny’s Johrzeit can come out on a Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, but never on a Monday, Wednesday nor Shabbos.

September 13, 2012 1:47 pm at 1:47 pm #896526oomisParticipantHi Rashbak, nice to hear from new people. My cousin from E”Y many, many years ago was the Chazzan and youth leader in a Shul in Atlanta, for about five years (on Shlichut). He said the community was exceptionally warm and welcoming, and his family’s saty there was most memorable and happy.
September 13, 2012 3:09 pm at 3:09 pm #896527midwesternerParticipantSo where are you, Dunwoody?
Unless there is something I don’t get, not sure how one can be successful building a kehilla if one bases a RH Drasha theme on anything associated with Austin Powers.
September 13, 2012 4:12 pm at 4:12 pm #896528The RashbakMember147 – I did not realize that. Thanks for pointing it out.
Everyone else, thank you for the warm welcome.
Gatesheader – I agree. First I left New YOrk, and then the orthodox center of Atlanta. We’re only 10-12 miles from the large and small orthodox areas (Toco Hills and Dunwoody). But the suburbs are ripe for growth, as were Lakewood, Monsey, West Hempstead and Waterbury. It’s a struggle at first. But we have a nice shul, plenty of very cheap housing with nice, big houses. G-d willing, we’ll have an eruv encompassing 1,000 homes in the next few weeks (negotiating with TWO power companies that cover the area). Depending on the time of year, we have daily minyanim and night seder. And we have a fun mix of Ashkenazim and Sephardim from different parts of the world. What we really need is a good rav to stick with us. We’ve had a few rabbis come and go, but no one really invested in the community. So if you know anyone… :-).
I’m going to post separately about Rosh Hashanah drasha topics. I’m curious to see responses.
Again, thank you for the warm welcome!
September 13, 2012 8:03 pm at 8:03 pm #896529The RashbakMemberWe’re in Norcross. East of I-85.
I haven’t worked Austin Powers into a drasha yet, but there’s still time :-).
