I’m genuinely surprised that the Ashkenazi trauma post made it past screening. certainly there are some unhinged mods here. Maybe the same that approve my troll posts.

Mod29 shut it down a minute after I tried to point out that sfardim (mostly syrians) are prejudiced against Ashkenazim.
Apparently, only bashing of Ashkenazim is ok. Is it because we’re white? Last time I checked Syrians are white too

CS, based on your post you do not know English. Here is the corrected version:

I don’t know or care if you’re Sephardic, I could say based on your posts that you’re an immature, attention seeking, troll.

    “Ashkenazic” is not a race.

If there is any such thing as race, Jewish-Ashkenaz would be it. In fact, that’s what I always enter into the (racist) government forms. I am not from the Caucasus.

I do say, though, that black is not a race. It is a skin attribute that many races have in common.

    #2035106

The post was in now way offensive, it contemplated real issues. Maybe it should have been written in a slightly lighter way. Still, the immediate visceral “ashkenazi lives matter” reaction was way inappropriate and shows that any community can fall low.

Maybe part of the reason that most are accustomed to Reform/MO/non-Jewish views and understand what they hear. In this case, a traditional Sephardi view was not on their radar and sounded unfair. General musar advice is when you hear an accusation – even if it feels unfair, stop and contemplate and try to find a morsel of truth even in the most unfair accusation. If you find it, you will benefit from it even if the accuser did not intend to benefit you (which is not a case here).

That’s semantics; you’re saying lashon hora on an entire group (actually, sefardim are often stunned to find out how small of a minority they are in the Jewish population… Living in their neighborhood they sometimes think it’s 50/50). There are 13 million jews and only 1.5 are sefardi. Roughly 12%. So… What you’re saying is that 11.5 million jews are neurotic, while sefardim are mentally healthy. Just take out the word ashkenaz, put in jew, t then change sefardi for German, and you’ll see what we’re saying

My mistake; the ratio is 20%/80%, with 3.5 million sefardim – my apologies

If that type of discussion was blocked from every post, there would not be many threads getting past the first thirty responses. Y. O. Could be unhinged or racist or a troll. But he was right on topic with what animates us. We did reply. We took the bait. Kudos to the mods that are being bombarded with this provocative posts and keep on letting them through. Probably the most patient ones here.

Agreed. My Rov made the same point last year when some people started parroting “Jewish Lives Matter”. That we Yidden should never be taking or re-coining slogans originating from the lowest of the low.

Halachically there is no difference between Sephardim, Ashkenazim and Mizrachim however in DNA testing there’s a seperate catogory for Ashkenazim and Sephardim. I’m not sure how accurate these categories are since there were many Sephardim that never left Europe since the Spanish and Portuguese expulsions and there are Ashkenazim who lived in EY for centuries so I can’t imagine it is all black and white. Also, the expulsion of the Sefardim Jews did not happen too long ago in terms of affecting genetics IMO.

But, l’maasoh, there are different categories when DNA is tested.

AAQ thank you! Perhaps my post was rough. But rather than having an open ear, most of you had a knee jerk reaction. Why not listen for once?

phil > DNA testing there’s a seperate catogory for Ashkenazim and Sephardim.

No, there is a separate category for Ashkenazim who came from a small number of medieval ancestors. The rest (loosely called Sepahardim) represent a wider DNA of all Jews from previous history, that is they consist of a much large set of groups both by DNA, and by minhagim and history. The “recent” (last 500-1000 years) growth of Ashkenazim obscures that.

A related question is – what is the source of the brocha that Ashkenazim got to grow like fish? Besides Torah scholarship, a possible answer is – beans. New agricultural methods introduced in Northern Europe in middle ages involved cross-growing beans and grain. Population was usually limited by amount of available protein that, in turn, was limited by amount of livestock that was limited by multiple factors – amount of grain, fields, labor … Beans introduced additional protein that lead to growth of population in Northern Europe comparative to Mediterranean. It also lead us to a kitniyos issue on Pesach, but it seems to be a small price to pay.
