I read “between the lines” of this note, and found an implication that Benei Torah are treating Yeshiva and Limud HaTorah as a 9-5 weekday job, from which they are off for the weekend. Perhaps that is the point of the letter. Even though it says that “we don’t know why this is happening”, perhaps that is part of the reason?

Agreed. If this is the case (and the Gadol Hador says it is), it is an Israeli Phenomenon. I could speculate why (the quality of learner is poorer, they are only learning to be Yotze, etc.) but that would be pure speculation w/o facts.
May 28, 2013 4:42 pm at 4:42 pm #955876popa_bar_abbaParticipantJust for the record, I don’t think I saw that implication between the lines.
May 28, 2013 4:54 pm at 4:54 pm #955877Yserbius123ParticipantPerhaps, just perhaps, there can be a way to compromise. Perhaps the Chareidishe oilom can come up with a middle-ground that will not “drag Talmidei Chachomim from their Batei Limud” but will also not force everyone wanting to live a Chareidishe lifestyle to be a “economical parasite on society”.
Why does everything in Israel have to be so polarized?

You mean like letting people work without having gone to the army?
May 28, 2013 4:56 pm at 4:56 pm #955879apushatayidParticipantWhy are you reading between the lines? Just read the words that appear on the page.

Chazal say limud haTorah is maigen, so it is a weapon of defense against our enemies. it is normal that chilonim do not understand this concept, but I would assume those here should.
May 28, 2013 5:40 pm at 5:40 pm #955883Grow up AlreadyMemberAs a Charedi who lives in Israel I resent the reading between the lines. Most People learning in kollel take it VERY seriously, much much more than a job! That on Friday and Shabbos there is less learning because people are helping at home etc
What Rav Steinman is saying is that we need to put in EVEN MORE. This has always been the case that in the times of Tzara HKBH is sending us messages to improve.
BTW I am female and my husband works I just see what is going onn around me. OH and I read the original in Hebrew
May 28, 2013 6:20 pm at 6:20 pm #955884gavra_at_workParticipantOH and I read the original in Hebrew
I also read the Hebrew, where it says in the fourth paragraph “Asher HaRipayon Bahem Rav”. And it asks the Roshei Yeshiva to be in charge, which implies that the Yeshivaleit are the ones who are not up to par.
The only solution at this point is to end conscription and Israel will rely on having a professional and well motivated army
Surprisingly, I agree. The draft is as outdated as Socialism.

See what I wrote:

Also the request is for the Rashei Yeshivot “??????” to awaken their students to take on more learning, not for them to “be in charge”!

You also read BETWEEN the lines of the original hebrew and it appears that by reading that which is not there, you distorted even the words that appear on the page.

So are you saying that the Gedolei HaDor are wrong? After all, if the Yeshivaleit are supposed to be helping at home, then their Tafkid at that point in time is not Limud HaTorah, and that would not be what the Ribbono Shel Olam wants from tham at that point. Why would the Gedolei Hador ask the Yeshivaleit to do something other than what the Ribbono Shel Olam wants?
May 28, 2013 9:06 pm at 9:06 pm #955889ZushyParticipantIt is totally unfair to read things into his letter. there is always room for improvement every where, but fact is that the yungerleit in eretz yisroel are creme de la creme.
R’ dovid soloveitchik said a similar thing a few weeks, although his yeshiva is full to the brim.

Yes, in a sense. Not once do I recall the Chareidim ever asking for something similar to this. It seems to me like the whole issue is a “tofasta meruba” problem, with the Chareidi oilom demanding full support for Yeshivas and kollels and demanding everyone sit in kollel. Every proposal by the Zionists is always a demand for elimination of the draft deferment. If instead, the Chareidim would propose something similar to, oh I don’t know, allowing a certain number of Chareidim to leave Yeshiva without having to join the army, perhaps the Zionists will accept that and perhaps we wouldn’t have this ridiculous self-made quagmire of ein kemach ein Torah.
May 28, 2013 9:51 pm at 9:51 pm #955891WIYMemberIf anyone actually read the letter while not half asleep they would realize the letter is regarding Yeshiva bochurim and not Kolleleit. Its true that in many Yeshivos there is no Friday seder and even if there is one it is “optional” or very weakly attended and very shvach. Also when there is such a seder it usually ends at 12:00 and the rest of the day is wasted. In America most Yeshivos end at 12:00 or 12:30. What do the highschool and beis medrash boys do from 12:30 and on? The Rabbeim have to go home and prepare for Shabbos but most boys have little to do on Fridays.
May 29, 2013 12:42 pm at 12:42 pm #955892Grow up AlreadyMemberWhat I am saying is that the Gedolim are saying: now (a time of Tzara) is not the time to help at home but rather to learn.
That is what HKBH wants.

There is no reference to a particular observation, although it’s obviously an area in which everyone short of the Vilna Gaon needs chizuk in (and even he found a few wasted seconds).
