We’re planning on moving up to Queens or Far Rockaway in July and looking for a 2 bedroom for 1,400. We’re not interested in a basement apartment (unless it’s above ground like in Far Rockaway/Bayswater) the downside to living in Far Rockaway is that it’s far with public transportation to ANYWHERE so we probably need a car (an added expense). Also we want to live near a grocery store. Anyone have any eitzas?

Kew Gardens is cheap and has all your requirements. Sign up for the KGHshuls yahoo group to see what’s available.

Try this street in Far Rockaway, Beach 11th. There are a bunch of smaller apartments (1-3 bedrooms) available and possibly a 4 bedroom for sale too.

The owner is Rabbi Savitsky but I don’t have his # off hand for you. He lives in Brooklyn though.

    Good luck!!!

There are sometimes listings that go up on onlysimchas. You can also try luach.com or the Jewish Press classifieds (online).

If you know anyone in the community, ask them to check local publications, ask in Shul etc. The “quieter” stuff can be very helpful.

    Hatzlacha!

Just remembered- for the houses on Beach 11th, you can look at the Milky Forst real estate website. I think they are listed on there.

Kosher World in Far Rockaway – depends on where you live in FR, but it is possible to walk there. Also, KW delivers. Brach’s in the Five Towns also delivers, I believe. But probably no deliveries on Erev Shabbos.

Yes, there are buses, but it’s a schlep, and again, depends on where you live in FR. But at the same time, there are buses – you can get to Brooklyn or Queens, and even into the Five Towns.

coffee do u mind me asking u if ur in a 2 or 3 br here in queens and how much ur paying for it? i know ur leaving soon which is why Im asking. theres really not that many apts available and its been very frustrating for us as so many good and AFFORDABLE leads were taken by the time i was able to inquire about it. id like to be out my current apt by july/august. were open to far rockaway as well (unfortunately like i said my husband nixed bayswater which im very angry abt as i recently spoke to a guy abt a 3 br to full bathroom with washer and dryer and it sounded so promising. er!) either way if u know of something thats not for u please let me know. thanks.

The Beach 11th area is a nice one. It used to be sometimes loosely referred to as “The Bungalow Colony,” because it is all frum people. But there are other areas as well, where you can get an apartment in a two family home.

I’m still not sure why you would want to live in Far Rockaway over Kew Gardens Hills. What advantage are you seeing in one over the other?

i dont have any secret identities but if the moderators let you give your email id probably have my husband talk to you. imYH were due with our second kid end of june so any second bedroom would potentitally need to be able to to fit 2 kids. im constantly checking craigslist, trulia and zillow but I never know if these apartments are in jewish areas or not and they always want a bunch of extra fees which comes out to thousands of dollars upfront before you even move in. i really prefer relying on the jewish listings but like i said nothing really available and any info i do receive about a decent apt in queens or FR that is in our price range, is gone by the time we get to inquire about it.

Anyone interested in moving to the Far Rockawaya area, could benefit from posting for “APTSEEK” on the Five Towns Shuls List. The e-mail address is [email protected]. You would need to sign up for that particular yahoogroup first, and then you can send e-mail posts directly to the FTS listserve without having to sign in each time to yahoogroups.

for some reason my last post didnt end up going through. they may or may not let your email through. i have seen the mods post peoples’ personal info up here in the past but i guess it depends on the circumstance. if u dont want to give it out thats fine too. bc we may have different sources, just post apartments u hear about on here. i dont want to steal anything away from you so anything u know that is not nogeah for you, you can post up and i can look into them if i think theyre good for us. im open to pretty much anywhere in the near vicinity. i honestly dont care which area we move to as long as its nice, affordable, and i have access to laundry 🙂

Generally, when frum people talk about Queens, they mean KGH, which is the largest frum community in Queens. If you need public transportation, KGH isn’t so great. You have to take a bus to the subway. Kew Gardens, on the other hand, is walking distance to the E, F, J, and Z trains. From FR, you can take the A train, but it’s a long trip to most places (hence the “Far” in “Far Rockaway”).

Double Standard (3 years ago) said KG is cheap. By most people’s standards, it isn’t.

i personally dont care for queens in general and never really made any friends which is why it doesnt matter which area I live in if we stay here (altho hillcrest has a slight advantage cuz of the no alternate side thing). I might like FR better because people tell me its more out of townish (altho I really dont know if its true. Ive only been there a few times to go to Central ave.) I do prefer a private house over an apartment building (one of those complexes type builings are ok) and I prefer not being tied to anything more then a 1 yr lease. I also need a place that would accept a pet as we have a parakeet. I dislike being in NY all together so any area is as good as the next. Like i said Im more picky about the apartment itself then where its located. My husband is the opposite and cares more about where its located then the apartment itself but when Im really adamant about something he tends to cave in.
