Can anyone explain what this means in detail?
And why does the Chofetz Chaim mention that it is muttar and then say it can almost never be muttar and that it is assur?
June 20, 2013 3:48 pm at 3:48 pm #960270HaLeiViParticipantIf a person said something about himself in front of three people then he is aware that it will spread, and therefore he obviously doesn’t mind it being spread. I hear people interpreting this to mean anything that was said in front of anyone, by anyone.

June 20, 2013 5:23 pm at 5:23 pm #960272HaLeiViParticipantWhat’s fascinating about this Halacha is that it is based on the fact that it is obvious that people don’t really refrain from Lashon Hara.
June 20, 2013 5:53 pm at 5:53 pm #960273Sam2ParticipantHaLeiVi: Of course. Kullam B’avak Lashon Hara. But the Chafetz Chaim’s interpretation of this Halachah is against the vast majority of Rishonim. Then again, being Machmir in these Inyanim is never such a bad thing…

explain his interpretation
June 20, 2013 10:02 pm at 10:02 pm #960275HaLeiViParticipantSam, being makpid because you feel like doing so is a great thing indeed. However, people feel like being Makpid on Lashon Hara is not possible for them and they give up before they start.
The same goes for Limud Hatorah. Being unaware of the main Chiyuv of learning some by day and some by night, people think that the minimum is to learn at all times, and give up before they start. I can understand why a Rebbe would prod his Talmidim that they must learn the whole day, but they should be aware what’s what.
