There is no prohibition on eating rock, even if you manage to make it edible. If the Torah didn’t set limits on a class of food you don’t need to withold for lack of express permission.

Therefore, if I catch an alien, can I eat it? Would it need Shechita oreven Nechira? Assuming that אבר מן החי applies, do we need explicit definition of what removes that Issue?

If the aliens are animals, they would have to meet the same requirements as regular earthly animals, and we would also need a tradition that they were kosher (this would probably require a navi, so don’t hold your breath). If an alien were sentient, the question (addressed in science fiction) is whether they could become a ger. If a plant, it would probably be kosher – but consider what if the plant were sentient and wanted to convert. The probability is that any alien food source would be toxic for humans, or at least would be inedible due to a different chemical composition.

A rock isnt considered a חי vis a vis דומם, צומח etc only a חי would need שחיטה which if there were aliens they would need it but why wouldn’t it need other סימני כשרות

Assuming that it has the איסור אבר מן החי that means it’s a living animal, if so it has to be categorized as kosher in the animal world, so if it’s a bird it needs a mesora מדאורייתא גם לספרדים if it’s a animal than it can be mutar only if it has סימני טהרה otherwise its assur.

What happens if Elon Musk is right and there are real people on Mars? Do we first have to confirm their hashkafah before considering how to use them in our favorite chulent recipe (presuming of course we can also obtain a top of the line chassideshe hashgacha from the shaliach to Mars).

Depends on how you define “Ein Davar Tamei Yored Min Hashamayim”

Does HaLeiVi eat everything he meets? I would have thought that the question would be may we convert them and marry them?

If it fell down “For The Heaven”, then it’s Kosher.

There can be no Geirus with an Alien.
Only humans can convert (a human is defined as an earthly being with a soul).
While an Alien could be like humans in everyway, that they’re not descendants of Adam and Eve means they have no Neshama & can’t convert.

Don’t you have anything better to do with your time? If you want something to eat, take a break from your beis medrash shteiging and go get a tuna beigel.

KuvultL What is your source that Ha-Shem never created people in other worlds (or universes)? And where does it say that only a human can convert?

Akuperma, they are most likely not included in וזאת החיה אשר תאכלו. Although we know that בהמה בכלל חיה, that doesn’t apply to all living things, but just בהמה and חיה. In fact, the Pasuk spells out אשר על הארץ.

Perhaps, if extra terrestrials can levitate then they can ve included in the broad term, עוף השמים, in which case they are certainly Kosher, not being mentioned in the list of 20. (Even if they are דורס it shouldn’t matter since those Simanim are merely an observation — by Noach, according to Tosafos — but not a Halacha.)

If anything, you can say that they remain in the original prohibition of Adam Harishon, who wasn’t allowed to eat any living creature until Noach earned it by saving them. Extra terrestrial creatures were not part of that grant of לכם יהיה לאכלה.

Fakenews, you never know … Every shocking episode came as a shock.

Coffee Addict, those classifications of the four levels of material are not in the Torah and so they can’t have a bearing on Halachah.

Ard, I did spell it out, and intentionally so.

Honest Spirit, that would depend on how we get the Issue of אבר מן החי and how it was introduced. As for birds, being that it is 100% not of the twenty listed non-kosher birds there’d be no need for a Mesora. The Mesora concept came about because it became obvious that we can’t decide from instant observation. Such as the case of the תרנגול דאגמא.

Gadolhadorah, you can apply that same question to what-if q cow becomes smart enough to express opinions.

As for אין דבר טמא יורד מן שמים, does that apply to an Eagle?

Mordechai, I don’t assume that they know the future. I doubt Sheidim know the lottery numbers. But even so, I can only threaten to eat him unless he tells me, if I can prove that he’s Kosher.

Akuperma, it is surely מסתבר that only children or Adam can have the Bris Hatorah. After all, we have the Medrash of everyone being a part of Adam.

Provaxx, is that complaint lodged at the content of my question or the fact that I visited this site? What would be an otherwise better use of the CoffeeRoom? You like Trump/Biden? Should I ask another question about Zionism and watch how fast the two extremes wish death upon the other?

Yeah, I know that the Bal Chovos Halevavos didn’t have much patience for hyper theoretical questions, but then again, this is not where I come for a chavrusa.

    #2397690

I would worry more whether their halocha allows them to eat us.

What do you define as the “Torah”?
