The famous picture drawing of the Baal HaTanya seems to show big Peyos. More than the typical Lubavitcher today.March 31, 2022 9:24 pm at 9:24 pm #2074636

Look at Shaar ha-Mitzvos and Taamei ha-Mitzvos, Parshas Kedoshim.
It’s close to the end of the first paragraph.
Not sure what you can ta’ane after this.April 1, 2022 12:15 am at 12:15 am #2074712
TS, I saw it – it says that the arizal would let them grow long let them dangle, until they reached the area of the beard, then he would cut them, because at that point they’re not called payos anymore. Sounds like mid-sized payos, several inches long – he even refers to them as “aruchos”
Definitely not the way chabad takes a number 3 haircut all over; this is a proof to the other side, that there’s an inyan to have long payos. Not as long as most chasidim, but what he’s describing sounds exactly like the length of the netziv’s payos that we see in his photos.April 1, 2022 3:31 pm at 3:31 pm #2074801
The arizal says to cut your peyos, not let them grow long. He is saying that you should not have long peyos. (Which is unlike other chassidim which do have long peyos).
In short, the arizal holds not to have long peyos. And that you should cut them.April 2, 2022 8:58 pm at 8:58 pm #2074817
TS, i read what you posted from the sefer and that’s just not what it’s saying. I think you’re going by what others told you. If you want to refute it please post the Hebrew and your translation, because i read it and it’s simply not saying what you claim.April 2, 2022 9:41 pm at 9:41 pm #2074926
TS Baum, the Arizal is saying that they shouldn’t be longer than the beard; and if they are longer than the beard, then you should cut them to be less long than past the beard. But he writes to not to cut them before the point that they reach the beard.April 2, 2022 11:22 pm at 11:22 pm #2074939April 3, 2022 12:38 am at 12:38 am #2074952
Chabad children, I’ve seen with such payos, but once they have beards they cut their payos the same length as the rest of their hair, like a number 3 or 4.April 3, 2022 10:44 pm at 10:44 pm #2075179
Who is the chabad chossid around here?April 3, 2022 10:45 pm at 10:45 pm #2075060
Oh, I never knew you were a chabad chossid!
In more simple terms, who is the chabad chossid, me or you?
So who would know better?April 4, 2022 7:44 am at 7:44 am #2075254
I’ve encountered many, many lubavitcher men, and I’ve never seen one that has payos that are long(aruchos), that are left from the temple around the ear to dangle (the words of the arizal, meduldalos) until reaching the beard. I don’t believe you’re understanding the picture presented by the words of rav chaim vital.
