    Seen on “The Consumerist”

Scammers on Craigslist are ordering tough-to-identify pay-per-call phone numbers, then list them on ads, baiting people to call and pay exorbitant fees. Common area codes for pay lines are 976, 940, 915, 556, 554, and 550.

Reader Ho Ko spotted the chicanery:

Ordinary looking phone numbers, like (908-554-2787) that are pay-per-call, often for $10 a call. The latest scam is to call people with Craigslist ads, asking them to call back at one of these numbers. The caller is charged $10 to leave a message on an answering machine.

Ho Ko pointed out that Verizon’s customer service site has a listing of numbers to watch out for.

I don’t understand how does the phone companies let this happen?? If a company does do-pay for call, then there should be a recording that it is a Pay-per-call and should give people the option to accept it or not. Otherwise do not let these companies exist.

Companies will do anything to get people to call anywhere. “Free conference calls” that require calling somewhere in Iowa for example, may be free to you

(if you have nationwide calling plan which most do), but not to your provider who pays a nice connection fee to the local network operator in Iowa. Do it often enough and your own provider will do whatever it can to get even with you (Sprint tried, but lost in court to block calls to these free conference call numbers), up to and including terminating your service. Know who you are calling before calling them.
